Nothing like a trip to the emergency department to end a birthday party! It’s a phrase that no one ever wants to utter, especially not in the context of a birthday celebration meant to commemorate the special day of a beautiful child.

Yesterday marked my daughter's 8th birthday party, a milestone that we had been eagerly anticipating for weeks. the excitement of the day built over the weeks, and the morning of was met with thrills and excitement. Initially, our biggest concern was whether the weather gods would be on our side. With a table full of food, decorations, and a delicious cake ready to be unveiled, we hoped for clear skies and sunshine.

As luck would have it, the weather gods smiled upon us, and our park party went ahead without a hitch. The sun shone brightly, casting a warm glow over the festivities, and the air was filled with the sounds of laughter and joy. All the children were running around, their energy palpable as they engaged in various activities like riding their bikes, swinging high into the air, skating, and playing games and having a ball. The atmosphere was electric, and it felt like a scene straight out of a perfect childhood memory.

After over two hours of unrestrained fun and excitement, it was finally time to pack up and wind down the celebration. Just as we were gathering the remnants of the party my teenage son decided to start a spontaneous game of soccer with the younger kids. The enthusiasm was infectious, and everyone was eager to join in, including the birthday girl herself. However, amidst the laughter and the cheers, that’s when everything took a sudden and unexpected turn for the worse, spiralling downward for the birthday girl.

In a flurry of excitement, a moment of miscalculation led to an unfortunate accident during the soccer game. As the children raced back and forth, the birthday girl, filled with the thrill of the game, collided with her big brother, resulting in a fall that left her in tears. In an instant, the joy that had filled the air was replaced with concern and worry. The fun and laughter of the party quickly faded as we rushed to assess her injuries, realizing that this was not the way we had envisioned celebrating her special day.

Well, what a way to end my daughter's 8th birthday party! What started as a day filled with joy and laughter had unexpectedly transformed into a frantic rush to the emergency department. The memories of cake and games were overshadowed by the anxiety of ensuring our little girl received the care she needed. While we ultimately left the hospital with a hairline fracture, a splint and a sling , it was a stark reminder that even the most joyous occasions can take an unexpected turn. We learned that while birthdays are meant to be filled with happiness, they can also serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the importance of being prepared for anything. I am grateful that my car came with a first aid kit, so I acted quickly applying a bandage around her wrist and a sling until I get could her home for ice and pain relief, then straight to the emergency department.

Even though the day ended on a low, her spirits were still high, a new accessory for 4 weeks, and a memory she will never forget.

Until next time, stay safe.

Much love,

Bex XOXO
